NL: Chris Young (SP--PADRES)
Young has quietly put up some very good numbers this year. He is on the verge of becoming a must start in all formats. He has averaged almost a strikeout per inning, and his ERA and WHIP is a touch above three and one respectively. This week, Young will be home for two starts against the A's and the Giants (possibly without Bonds). He should produce two very good outings.
AL: Jamie Shields (SP-- DEVIL RAYS)
Who??? Yes, Jamie Shields is an unheard of rookie that is actually undefeated this year. Granted, he has only had 5 starts, but he is 4-0 with an ERA of 3.00. He has electric stuff, but has been getting a lot of hitters out on his change-up. He will be on the road for two starts this week, which is not great, but the starts come against the Marlins and Nationals--neither of which are offensive powerhouses.
Hitter of the Week:
NL: Chris Burke (OF/2B-- ASTROS)
I got a feeling that the Astros are about to get hot. With the return of the Rocket, and a 'sparkplug' like Burke is, this could be just what the team needs. Burke has finally been starting to see regular playing time and is batting .419 (18-for-43) in his past 12 games. He will not do anything outstanding, but his 2B eligibility makes him a nice addition.
AL: Reggie Sanders (OF--ROYALS)
Reggie is like the Energizer Bunny, he keeps going, and going. Sanders is still capable of a 20-20 season, even at his age. This week, he will be traveling to Cincinnati and St. Louis, both of which I'm sure Reggie will have a little extra motivation, being former teams of his.
Pickup of the Week:
Jon Lester (SP--RED SOX)
Coming into this year, Lester was regarded the best pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization over some guy named Papelbon. So that tells you what Lester is capable of. As long as he stays in the Red Sox rotation, he will be a great start due to the wins that his team will provide. Lester struck out 10 men in his last start so people started to jump on the bandwagon...if he is still available--you should too!
