In this edition of Twins Minor League Notebook, all four affiliates lose, with very little offense on all levels. The Wings lost to Lehigh Valley, the Cats dropped two to Richmond, the Miracle got 11 hits in a loss, and the Snappers were blasted by Burlington.

Rochester Red Wings Lose to Lehigh Valley

The Red Wings took a loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Tuesday, as they struggled with the bats all night. The team got a decent start from starter Yoslan Herrera, who pitched five innings of three-run ball, but they could not muster much offense to help him. Tim Lahey continued his early season struggles in relief, allowing three earned runs, as his earned run average ballooned to 7.80. Matt Fox finished the game, tossing two shutout innings.

Player of the Week Trevor Plouffe continued his early hot hitting, tripling in the game. Brian Dinkelman hit his second double of the season, but the Wings have not been able to put it together offensively yet this season. Most of the regulars are batting well below .275, and they are in last place in the International League North.

Rock Cats Swept in a Doubleheader

After dropping the first game despite a nice effort from starter Mike McCardell, the Rock Cats squandered a 1-0 first inning lead in the night cap, falling to Richmond 3-1. For the day, the Cats scored only one run, as the Richmond pitchers kept them off balance all day long. McCardell picked up his second loss of the season in the opener, despite going the whole seven innings, and allowing only two earned runs. Tyler Robertson was just as effective in the night cap, but the offense was just not there on this day.

Ben Revere picked up hits in both games, as he is currently batting .315 for the Cats in the early going. The move to Double-A has not affected how productive he can be from the leadoff spot, as the young speedster has been one of the more consistent bats in the lineup thus far. I think it is safe to say that Rene Tosoni is ready for Rochester, and they could use his bat.

11 Hits Not Enough for Fort Myers

The Miracle were hot at the plate on Tuesday, but did not get the support on the mound, as they dropped a contest to Jupiter 6-2. Yangervis Solarte, Evan Bigley, Deibinson Romero, and Chris Cates all had two hits in the contest, but the team was only 1-6 with runners in scoring position. Bigley hit his sixth double of the young season, and Solarte hit his fifth, but the team left ten on base.

Brad Tippett had the strikeout pitch working in this game, as he fanned nine in only six innings of work. The young right-hander picked up his first loss of the season, though he has looked sharp in his last three starts. In 15 innings pitched in 2010, Tippett has struck out 15 batters, and has walked only three since walking three in his season debut out of the pen on April 10. Michael Allen finished the game, but was hit hard for the second time in his last three relief appearances.

Beloit Blasted by Burlington

Brad Stillings lasted only two innings in his start on Tuesday, as he was blasted for eight runs, six of which were earned. It was by far his worst start of the season, and one in which he would like to forget. Ben Tootle and Peter Kennelly were just as ineffective out of the bullpen, as the Bees torched the pitching staff all night. Edgar Ibarra finished the game, as was the only Snappers’ arm to not allow an earned run.

Shortstop Ben Dozier was the only Snappers bat to pick up multiple hits in the game, as he had two knocks in the contest. Aaron Hicks went 1-3, and has driven his batting average to .286, after starting the season in a terrible slump. With the hit, the Twins top prospect has now hit safely in nine straight games.
