The Snappers struggled through the month of May, losing 19 of their 30 games. They got some great efforts from some prospects, as Bradley Tippett continued his Midwest League dominance. Joe Testa, James Beresford, and Angel Morales also had great months. Check out our May recap.

The Beloit Snappers struggled during the month of May, posting an 11-19 record, and now find themselves in last place in the Midwest League Western Division. Some prospects had a good month though, while some big name prospects struggled. The team has had a rough go out of the gate, but has enough talent to turn the season around this summer.

Beresford Heating Up
Shortstop James Beresford had a great month of May, batting well over .300 in 29 games. He was one of only two position players to appear in each game, and he led all regulars in batting. Beresford also led the team in on-base percentage, hits, and stolen bases.

Bigley Gets Promoted
The Snappers lost a big bat in their lineup during the month of May, as Evan Bigley was promoted to Fort Myers of the Florida State League. In the month, Bigley was batting over .300, and was a main cog in the team’s offense. In nine May games, Bigley was batting .341, and had two home runs. In 19 games with Fort Myers, Bigley is batting .266, and has driven in five runs.

Morales Mashing
Angel Morales, one of the top prospects in the Twins organization, blasted five home runs in the month of May, leading the team. After hitting only one home run in April, Morales has found his power stroke, and has bumped his batting average up considerably. It is a long season, and Morales will definitely be a big part of the Snappers success this year.

Too Many Strikeouts
The Snappers have been striking out at an incredible pace this season, and May was no different. In 30 games, the Snappers struck out over 250 times, and have been leaving too many men on base. This is leading to a low average with runners in scoring position, and inevitably leading to their dismal record. These are all young prospects, and their batting eyes should advance with more plate appearances.

Testa Still On Fire
Joe Testa, a Wagner College product, continues to dominate in the Midwest League. He appeared in 12 games in May, starting one, and had an earned run average under 1.25. The right-hander struck out better than a batter per inning, and notched two saves. For the season, Testa has been just as dominant, striking out 48 batters in only 35.1 innings. Overall, he has a 1.78 earned run average, and batters are hitting only .148 against him.

Tippett Continues To Roll
Since moving to the starting rotation last season in Elizabethton, Bradley Tippett has been lights out, and continues to mow down hitters in the Midwest League. Once one of the top relievers in the system, Tippett has found his groove as a starter.

” I’m more comfortable starting. I enjoy it. Knowing when and where I’m going to pitch is good,” Tippett told TwinCitiesDugout.com.

One thing that has helped Tippett has been his control, something he attributes to his success.

”I don’t throw hard, but I can throw the ball where I want to most of the time,” Tippett said.

One thing is for sure, Tippett has been the best starter on the team in 2009, and he is only going to get better with innings.
