The Rochester Red Wings have been heating up as of late, though they did struggle for the most part in the month of May. The won only ten of their 30 games, and really had a hard time putting two games together. Still, they have some of the better talent in the organization, and have the arms to help them turn their season around. Here is a recap of the month of May.
Batter of the Month
Jose Morales, Catcher
Morales is the best catching prospect in the Twins organization, and he is once again hitting his way back to the Minnesota Twins. During the month of May, Morales batted a ridiculous .382, and did not commit an error behind the plate. In total, Morales has 34 hits in 25 games, and scored seven times. During his 25 games, Morales picked up 12 multi-hit efforts, and was one of only a handful of Red Wings to hit consistently all month long.
For the season, Morales is batting .315, and most scouts believe he should make it back to Minnesota this season. He has drawn raves from everyone in the Twins organization, and has not committed an error all season long. He has hit well on the road as well, and has really shaken off an April where he batted only .233. But that was mostly due to the bad weather in Rochester during the month of April.
Honorable Mention: Brian Buscher (.301, 3HR, 13RBI), Darnell McDonald (.322, 5HR, 20 RBI), Denard Span (.342, 9SB)
Pitcher of the Month
Mariano Gomez, Relief Pitcher
The Rochester Red Wings pitching staff struggled as a whole during the month of May, but they did get some good work out of the bullpen by Gomez. Gomez appeared in 11 games for the Red Wings, posting a 2.81 earned run average, and was one of only two Red Wings pitchers to have an earned run average under 3.00. In 16 innings of work, Gomez walked only two batters, and struck out 11.
For the season, Gomez has appeared in 24 games, and has been one of the better relievers in the International League. The right-hander has posted a 2.20 earned run average this season, and has picked up a win and a save. He has been in lock down mode with runners in scoring position, as his ERA is an incredible 0.77 in those situations. He will likely be in the Twins bullpen at some point in 2008.
Honorable Mention: Casey Daigle (11G, 2.60 ERA, 17K), Francisco Liriano (6GS, 3.46ERA, .229BAA)
