Twins Sign 11 Draft Picks
The Minnesota Twins signed 11 of their draft picks on Tuesday, including first rounder Ben Revere. Revere, a centerfielder from Lexington (KY) Catholic High School stands only 5'8'' tall, but the Twins feel he can develop into a leadoff batter. He also has tremendous speed, and will need to use it in order to have success in professional baseball.Joining Revere in signing were five pitchers and five position players, including eight of their first 20 selections. Michael McCardell (sixth round), Dan Berlind (seventh round), Steve Hirschfield (ninth round), Andrew Schmiesing (eleventh round), Dan Rohlfing (fourteenth round), Dan Latham (fifteenth round), Lee Martin (eighteenth round), and Ben Petsch (nineteenth round) all signed, and they were joined by Ozzie Lewis (21st round), and Spencer Steedley (25th round).McCardell and Berlind are both collegiate right-handed pitchers, McCardell from Kutztown University, and Berlind from Los Angeles Pierce College. McCardell went 7-3 for the Golden Bears in 2007, notching five saves, and struck out 86 batters in 67.1 innings of work. Berlind was named Pitcher of the Division for Pierce, leading them to the Western State Conference Southern Division Championship.Hirschfield played under Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn at San Diego State University, where he was tied for the team lead in wins this past season (5). Hirschfield was drafted twice before, once by Montreal (2004), and once by Colorado (2005). He posted a 4.41 earned run average in 2007. Schmiesing is the first player taken from Saint Olaf College since 2003, and is a big, athletic centerfielder. He hit .446 this past season, smacking seven home runs.Dan Rohlfing moved from third base to catcher this past season, and still batted .486 with three home runs. Rohlfing was the first Oakville High Schooler to be drafted out of high school since 1991. Dan Latham is an incredible relief pitcher, who set the Tulane and Conference USA career saves record in his first three seasons with the team.Lee Martin appeared in 18 games for Southern Arkansas University in 2007, starting ten, and posted a respectable 4.12 earned run average. He won five games, and struck out 53 batters in 59 innings of work. Ben Petsch batted .328 during his senior season, becoming the first Belmont University draftee since 2005. He holds the Belmont school record for doubles in a career, as well as many others.Ozzie Lewis hails from the same school that gave the Twins Matt Garza, as the Fresno State product signed with the Twins on Tuesday. The 6'5'' outfielder was the WAC Tournament MVP in 2006, and batted .295 with seven home runs this past season. Spencer Steedley rounded out those who signed, as he won eight games for UNC Charlotte in 2007. However, the kid also can hit, as he led the Atlantic 10 in home runs and RBI in 2006.
