Matt Garza and Sean Tracey matched zeroes for seven innings. Garza was magnificent, allowing only four hits, walking one and striking out 11. He threw 100 pitches tonight. Tracey was almost as good allowing four hits, walking four and striking out four.
The game finally broke in the eighth. Actually, the Wings had a golden opportunity in the seventh, when Tracey walked the bases loaded after two were out. But he got Shawn Wooten on strikes to end the threat.
In the 8th, after two were out, Rochester finally broke thru when Garrett Jones hammered his 16th HR of the season with two men on to give the Wings a 3-0 lead. Then in the ninth, they struck for five runs, capped once again by Jones’ two-run double and Lew Ford’s two-RBI single.
Robert Korecky relieved Garza in the eighth, and pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his fifth save.
Garza’s gem lowered his ERA to 1.85, and gave him his 3rd AAA victory against one loss. It was a huge win for the Wings, as Scranton lost, thus cutting the Wings deficit to one game behind the Red Barons.
Lew Ford has made his presence felt in only two games. He has come to the plate ten times and has reached base in eight of those at-bats, with two hits, four walks, and two hit by pitches. Terry Tiffee has yet to get a hit in his first two games back with the Wings.
It was a big night for the hot and cold Garrett Jones (HR, double, 5 RBI), as he raised his team-leading RBI total to 72. All five RBI came with two outs. The Wings victory ties the season series at three apiece with two to play. The team returns home on Monday to open a series with Pawtucket.
