Twins Get Position Players In Rounds 6-8

Posted Jun 6, 2006

In the sixth, seventh, and eighth rounds, the Twins picked up position players, nabbing a catcher, first baseman, and a second baseman. Two of them are collegiate players, while one is a sweet-swinging first baseman from Canada. Here is a quick glance at Jeffrey Christy, Jonathan Waltenbury, and Brian Dinkelman.

In the sixth round, the Twins selected University of Nebraska catcher Jeffrey Christy, who was once drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 29th round of the 2002 June Draft. Considered by many as the best defensive catcher in the Big 12, Christy also handles the stick well, and would add to the Twins lack of depth in the catching ranks in the farm system. One of only four seniors on the Cornhusker squad, Christy also brings great leadership to the table.

In the seventh round, the Twins selected Jonathan Waltenbury, who was a main bat on Canada’s Junior Team. He has a great bat as well, and is a big kid. He is 6’3’’, weighs 230 pounds, and has good agility for a player his size. He looks and plays like a first baseman, and he can hit bombs.

In the eight round, the Twins added depth to their weak spot in the middle infielder, selecting Brian Dinkelman from McKendree College. A slick fielder who bats from the left-side, Dinkelman has great plate discipline, and makes all the plays in the field. He played four years of college ball, and has the mental makeup to prove it.
