Splitsville: Danny Matienzo v1.1

Matienzo likes to lead off an inning.

"Splitsville" is a series of articles on the Minnesota Twins' prospects that we'll be doing throughout their minor league careers. In version one/chapter one (v1.1) of Daniel Matienzo, we'll look at how the Eastern League All-Star Game MVP is doing at home versus the road, how he's hitting with the bases loaded, and more while playing for the New Britain Rock Cats.

First Things First: Matienzo is a much better hitter when he is playing first base, as opposed to being the designated hitter. His statistics extremely lopsided, as he is a .313 batter when he plays first, and a .225 batter as the designated hitter. He has 40 of his 63 RBI when he is a first baseman, and has blasted 10 of his 16 home runs.

No June Swoon: Matienzo put up his best power numbers last month, driving in 28 runs in his 30 games. He set a monthly-high with seven home runs, and he scored 20 times. Of his 32 hits in the month, 16 of them went for extra-bases.

Even Steven: Matienzo doesn't care where his playing, as he is solid both at home and on the road. He has split his 18 home runs right down the middle, and has only one more RBI on the road than at home. When it comes to scoring runs, he has one more run away from New Britain.

I'll Go First: When leading off an inning, Matienzo has thrived at the plate. He is hitting .353 in that role, and has six of his 18 home runs. He also has shown the ability to start a rally, by hitting five doubles in his 85 leadoff at-bats. Of his 30 leadoff hits, 11 of them have gone for extra-bases.

No Runners, No Problem: Matienzo has posted some his best numbers with the bases empty. He is hitting .290 with no-one on, and has hit 11 of his 18 dingers. He has walked 11 times, and 24 of his 53 hits have been of the extra-base variety.

Not So Grand: For someone with so many RBI, Matienzo has yet to hit a grand slam this season. He is a .200 hitter, and has no home runs. Although he is only 2-10, his two hits have been doubles, and he has driven in nine runs.
