Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/22

Cruz played his final winterball game in 2012

The Gigantes del Cibao, with Nelson Cruz, Leury Garcia, and Hanser Alberto, finished their 2012 campaign with Saturday's one-game playoff loss to Escogido. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Dominican Winter League

The Gigantes del Cibao and Leones del Escogido played a one-game playoff on Saturday, determining the final spot in this year's Dominican Winter League round robin postseason.

Escogido defeated Cibao, 5-2, knocking out Rangers players Nelson Cruz, Leury Garcia, and Hanser Alberto. Their seasons are now finished until spring training.

Cruz (right field) and Garcia (center field) got the start for Cibao on Saturday. Batting cleanup, Cruz went 1-for-4 with a double. He also struck out once. The two-hole hitting Garcia whiffed three times in four hitless at-bats, though he did have an outfield assist by erasing a runner at third base.

Venezuelan Winter League

Aragua's Yangervis Solarte (.285/.350/.399) went 1-for-4 with his 12th double in 42 winterball contests. Following a mini-slump, the 25-year-old Solarte has picked up the pace by hitting safely in nine of his last 10 contests.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

The Liga Paralela season concluded on Friday with Magallanes finishing off Tampa Bay in the best-of-three championship series.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared in Mexico on Saturday.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Ponce's Zach Zaneski (.257/.316/.314) helped carry his club to a 4-0 win by going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Saturday. The 26-year-old backstop had been just 3-for-21 without an extra-base hit over his previous nine games.

While Zaneski got the start at DH, Kevin Torres played behind the plate. The Puerto Rico native went 0-for-3, dropping him to just 2-for-26 (.077) in 12 games this season.

During the 2012 regular season, Torres appeared in 64 games with Single-A Hickory and posted a .236/.277/.297 slash line.

Australian Baseball League

Adelaide second baseman Gabriel Suarez, who was signed to a minor league deal by the Rangers earlier this week, played in both ends of his club's doubleheader on Saturday. Suarez went 1-for-7 in the two contests, and he committed two errors in the nightcap.

On Sunday (Saturday in the States), Suarez played in right field and went hitless in four at-bats.

Scuffling Brisbane outfielder Hirotoshi Onaka got the day off on Saturday, but he returned to the lineup on Sunday and went 1-for-2 with a walk and his fourth stolen base.
